Managing IT Systems to Keep HR Operations Functioning Smoothly

“While the clinicians are in the field, caring for patients, my team is back at the office helping to take care of the systems that support their work,” says Hoi Yee, Manager, Systems Analyst/Programmer, IT Solutions. Fourteen years ago, Hoi left the world of IT consulting to take a full-time position with VNSNY. Today, he and his team at VNSNY’s 5 Penn Plaza office provide programming support for key HR administrative functions like payroll and benefits. “The most important thing is making sure people get paid correctly and on time,” he observes.

Hoi says he was “stunned” to learn he was receiving an ESPRIT award. “I like to stay in the background,” he says. He gives much credit to his two staff members, programmers Robert Lee and Lana Ganzman, for their expertise and their commitment to projects large and small. Hoi adds that his team has flourished in part because of his supervisor, Grant Chappell, Director of IT Solutions. “Grant recognizes that we are professionals, and gives us the confidence and freedom to do what’s needed.” Hoi’s team is currently supporting the transition from the PeopleSoft application VNSNY has used for the past 20 years to the cloud-based Workday platform, scheduled to be implemented in summer 2019. “We’re excited to be working on something of this scope,” says Hoi. “It will consolidate a number of administrative functions into a centralized, single platform that will save money, time, and resources, while creating efficiencies.”

Despite juggling multiple responsibilities, Hoi has “maintained a stellar level of service to his internal clients,” notes his ESPRIT nomination. “Hoi and his team are the soldiers in the trenches on a daily basis making sure everything works as it’s supposed to.” The nomination also cites Hoi’s “total support for his team,” adding, “he is an unsung hero.”

Hoi says his team is proud to contribute to the great work VNSNY does for the community. “We want VNSNY’s clinicians to feel that they can work confidently,” he notes, “knowing that things are operating efficiently back here in the ‘house’.”
