Braving the Snowy Streets: VNSNY Staff Share Their Firsthand View of January 4, 2018 Blizzard

January 4, 2018–“When the obstacles are the greatest, that’s when our care providers are at their best,” says Susan Northover, Senior Vice President, Patient Care Services. During yesterday’s brutal winter storm, our staff once again went above and beyond for the New Yorkers who count on them. With the area pounded by winds reaching 50 miles per hour, patches of thunder and lightning, and up to a foot of steadily falling snow, Governor Cuomo declared an official state of emergency for New York City, Long Island and Westchester County. As always, though, our brave and dedicated VNSNY nurses, therapists, social workers and home health aides did not miss a step, traveling by mass transit, car, and on foot—and even by bicycle!—to reach the patients and clients who depend on them. While the snow continued to pile up throughout the day, our staff also kept their sense of humor intact and their smartphone

125 Years Later and Still Standing Strong

January 3, 2018–The 2018 VNSNY calendar celebrates the theme of enduring and thriving over time. It features over a dozen unforgettable photographs of famous sites throughout New York City that already existed in 1893, when Lillian Wald launched her fledging organization, and that remain deeply woven into the fabric of the city today. Not only were these iconic landmarks a vital part of New York City’s daily life in 1893—but 125 years later, like VNSNY, they’re still standing strong …and will remain standing strong for at least another 125 years. For more information about VNSNY’s 125th anniversary, click here.

NIH-Funded Study Looks at Effects of Delayed Dementia Diagnoses on Patients

December 15, 2017–If a home care clinician isn’t aware that a patient has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or another type of cognitive impairment, it can have a profound impact on the treatment protocols chosen and the resulting care outcomes. The VNSNY Center for Home Care Policy & Research is now conducting a study exploring the care trajectories of patients with existing diagnoses of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, as well as patients who have cognitive symptoms but do not have a formal Alzheimer’s/dementia diagnosis shown on the home care assessment. Senior Research Scientist Miriam Ryvicker, who has been with the Research Center since 2005, is collaborating with Jacqueline Merrill, Professor of Nursing (in Biomedical Informatics) at Columbia University Medical Center, on an analysis of VNSNY medical records and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) claims data. This analysis will look at patterns in health care use and care trajectories for VNSNY

An Interview with Dan Lowenstein, Vice President of Government Affairs

December 8, 2017–How did you get into Government Affairs and health care?  As we all know, public policy has the ability to make people’s lives much better—or much worse. Throughout my career working with health policy-focused elected officials, nonprofits, academia and consulting firms, I developed a fairly solid understanding of the policy and market dynamics impacting the health care sector. This enabled me to develop and advocate for sound public policy solutions that helped achieve organizational goals, and enabled people to get the health care they needed and deserved. What are the primary objectives of Government Affairs at VNSNY? The overarching goal is to ensure that public policy enables VNSNY to accomplish its mission and objectives. We have an internal and an external focus, which go hand in hand. It is important that VNSNY staff are aware of policy issues that impact their work, and that policy issues are considered in the decision

“Strength from Within” Employee Giving Campaign Aims to Break Record

November 16, 2017–VNSNY’s Nurse-Family Partnership, which recently honored over 100 of its newest graduates in the Bronx, is just one of VNSNY’s many life-changing Charitable Care and Community Benefit programs. These programs are supported in part by donations from VNSNY’s own staff members. “In 2016, contributions by our employees to these programs set a record for both dollars raised and number of participants,” says Theodore Traver, Manager of Direct Response for VNSNY’S Development Department. “This year’s ‘Strength from Within’ campaign is aiming to keep that momentum going.” To date, VNSNY’s employee giving campaign for 2017 has raised $38,500—more than halfway toward its $60,000 target—with donations from over 130 staff members. “While we want to reach our financial goal to help provide care to some of the most vulnerable New Yorkers we serve, what’s just as important to us is increasing VNSNY’s employee participation,” adds Theodore. “We’re urging everyone to consider making a

An Interview with Kerry Parker, VNSNY’s EVP, General Counsel & Chief Risk Officer

November 16, 2017–How would you describe VNSNY’s main strategic challenges? VNSNY’s senior management is now in the process of plotting out the company’s strategic direction over the next several years. No one knows how things in Washington will shake out, but we need to prepare for potential regulatory and policy changes to Medicaid, including possible reductions in funding for New York State. We’re also seeing big changes in reimbursement, as value-based purchasing arrangements begin to replace the old fee-for-service model. Plus, there are challenges in New York around minimum wage and overtime legislation, which affects the entire industry. We’re also focused on how to grow VNSNY over the next three to five years, both organically and inorganically, while ensuring we have the scale and resources to deal with these impending changes. We’re making good progress, and will present the plan to VNSNY’s Board of Directors when we complete it. What impact will

VNSNY Hosts Veterans Day Breakfast to Honor Staff and Volunteers for Their Military Service

November 16, 2017–In recognition of Veterans Day, VNSNY hosted a breakfast event on November 15th honoring staff members and volunteers who are military veterans or are currently serving in the U.S. armed forces. Joseph Vitti, Supervisor of the VNSNY Hospice Veterans Program, was master of ceremonies for the event, which was held at VNSNY’s 70th Street headquarters. The honorees in attendance were joined by a number of VNSNY senior leaders, including Rosemary Baughn, Senior Vice President of VNSNY Hospice and Palliative Care, who gave the welcoming address. The morning’s keynote speaker (shown above, addressing the group) was Erik Langhoff, MD, PhD, Director of the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx, who spoke on “The Quest for Quality of Care, The VA and Non-VA Experience.” The event concluded with the playing of Taps—a solemn reminder of those veterans who are no longer with us, and their colleagues who never made

The VNSNY Nurse-Family Partnership: Celebrating More than a Decade of Life-Changing Relationships

November 9, 2017–Bronx NFP program recognizes 105 mothers at 2017 fall graduation ceremony On November 2nd, friends, family and VNSNY staff gathered at the Metro Café on Waters Place in the Bronx to honor 105 young first-time mothers—this year’s graduating cohort from two of the four nursing teams in VNSNY’s Bronx Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP). Each mother had spent the past two and a half years, starting in pregnancy and continuing through their child’s second birthday, working closely with one of the Bronx NFP’s 32 nurses to develop and refine their parenting skills and advance their own education and career. “The relationships these young mothers build with their NFP nurses are truly life-changing,” says Carol Odnoha, director of VNSNY’s NFP program. At the ceremony, attendees were welcomed by Carol and Marki Flannery, VNSNY’s Executive Vice President and Chief of Provider Operations. Roberta Holder-Mosley, NFP Director for the City of New York, then addressed
