May 24, 2018–This past Sunday, May 20th, VNSNY’s new “Touching Lives” branding campaign debuted in New York Times Magazine’s annual Health Issue. The ad, depicting a VNSNY clinician providing physical therapy to an elderly New Yorker, appeared on page 19—directly opposite an installment of Dr. Lisa Sanders’ popular medical mysteries column “Diagnosis.” Circulation of The New York Times Magazine is over one million—more than one-third of whom live within the New York metropolitan area—with an estimated three-plus readers per copy. “The fact that this ad is also reaching millions of readers outside New York is an added benefit, since many of those readers are transplants with loved ones living in our service area,” notes Catherine Callaway, Vice President, Marketing and Development. VNSNY’s “Touching Lives” campaign will continue throughout 2018. Another major VNSNY ad placement will take place next month in New York magazine’s Top Doctors issue, which is immensely popular among consumers as

May 17, 2018–For the 27 VNSNY staff members enrolled in this year’s Achieving a Culture of Excellence (ACE) Leadership Program, the last seven months have been an intense stretch of biweekly workshops, informational meetings with VNSNY’s senior leaders, and an in-depth final group project—all in addition to their regular jobs. On May 9th, their hard efforts were saluted at this year’s official ACE graduation ceremony. The 2017-18 ACE course, VNSNY’s eighth since the program’s launch in 2004, brought together an outstanding group of emerging leaders from across the enterprise. “This year’s cohort has never ceased to amaze me,” says Amanda Weiner, who manages the program for VNSNY’s Department of Organizational Development. “From the first day, they’ve been engaged, excited, and full of intellectual curiosity. Each member of the program, in their own unique way, has learned and grown as a leader. I have no doubt that their impact will reach all corners

On behalf of everyone at VNSNY, I want to thank all of our amazing nurses for the fine work you do, day in and day out, providing the very highest level of quality care to our patients and plan members. You  play a key role in virtually every aspect of VNSNY’s care delivery—handling referrals and assessments, coordinating home care services, managing hospice patients’ symptoms with palliative care, providing specialized care for those with wounds, chronic diseases, and mental health conditions,

“Part of the Family”: Spotlight on Staff Member-Turned-Volunteer Carmen Ortiz

April 19, 2018–For almost 40 years, Carmen Ortiz has been faithfully reporting for duty at VNSNY—the first 36 of those years as a full-time employee, and the most recent four as a volunteer. She wouldn’t have it any other way. When Carmen retired in May, 2014 from her job as a Support Processor in VNSNY’s Bronx regional office, she told colleagues that she might look for volunteer work near her home in the Parkchester section of the Bronx. “Why not volunteer for VNSNY?” her supervisor asked. ‘You can take a few weeks to think about it.” “I’ll start on Monday,” Carmen replied. Born in East Harlem, Carmen moved as a young adult to the Bronx, where she raised three children while holding a series of factory jobs. In 1978, she applied to VNSNY and was hired as a home attendant, working out of the organization’s offices in the Sears Building on Fordham Road

April 19, 2018–Happy National Volunteer Week! In honor of this celebration of the nation’s volunteers, which lasts from April 15 to April 21, here are some interesting facts about VNSNY’s own dedicated group of volunteers. 1) VNSNY’s operations are supported by 557 volunteers. About 330 of these volunteers work with VNSNY Hospice and Palliative Care, which is required by Medicare to utilize volunteers for at least 5% of its total patient care hours. VNSNY’s other 200-plus volunteers help provide other types of support services to patients, such as phoning isolated seniors, and also assist with office operations, organizing art shows and holiday parties for our disadvantaged mental health clients. 2) All VNSNY volunteers go through a careful screening process. “Our volunteers are reviewed and their background is checked, similar to VNSNY’s hiring process for paying jobs, to make sure they’re a good fit for the responsibilities they’ll be taking on,” says Michael Ambrosini, VNSNY’s
