Anchor: Due to the difficult economic situation faced by many New Yorkers, hundreds of people in upper Manhattan received free turkeys a week before Thanksgiving. Reporter Jean Paul Dávila was there to hear from them, as they tell us what they are grateful for this year.
Reporter: As the rhythm of the music played, José Rafael Tabárez took a few steps. He told us he was thankful for many things, and not just for the free turkey.
José Rafael Tabárez: Well, I am grateful for many things. I had cancer and recovered. I also have opportunities to get a turkey here.
Reporter: Thanksgiving is just days away, and the Dominican Medical Center and VNS Health delivered more than 300 turkeys to the community. In many cases, people in the community do not have enough to buy the ingredients for Thursday’s dinner. With a turkey the whole family can enjoy the meal and invite others to eat with them. The line to receive the turkeys went around the corner and most of those who waited patiently were older adults. There are some who live alone and need moral support and support from our community. That is why these groups are delivering turkeys so that they can sit with their families and share Thanksgiving.
Margarita Dominguez: I am grateful to God for everything. Grateful for everything because God has given everything to me. I have a beautiful family. I have two children, including four grandchildren, and we are a very happy family.
Reporter: Volunteers helped to distribute turkeys, including one of the doctors from the Dominican Medical Center.
Dr. Fernando Taveras: It is not necessarily just the value of the turkey. It’s more symbolic. It is truly a representation of us thanking this community for allowing us to provide our services,
Reporter: A community that, despite the difficulties of life, faces it with great joy.
Carmen Torres: The Lord has blessed me. My children are healthy, and I’ve accomplished everything on own. I wanted my children to be professionals and they are!
