VNSNY’s Nurse Residency Program: Intensive Training Helps Nurses ‘Go from Novice to Expert’

May 12, 2021–Recent nursing school graduate Joann Wong was looking for her next career move after a brief stint working in a nursing home. Providing nursing care to people directly in their homes appealed to her, but she felt she needed more training before making that step. “I realized I like teaching people—I like it when they go home—but I didn’t think I had enough experience to go into home care and to be on my own in that way,” she says. So when Joann saw an advertisement on a job site for VNSNY Home Care’s new nurse residency program, she applied immediately. Today, Joann is part of the initial class of seven nurse residents who have successfully completed the first year of VNSNY’s unique two-year nurse residency. The program introduces newly graduated nurses to home care through a mix of classroom and hands-on skills training, followed by an intensive in-field mentorship

VNSNY Hosts Donation Drive for Homeless and At-Risk Veterans

May 5, 2021–May is Military Appreciation Month—and in honor of the month, VNSNY’s Veterans Program, in collaboration with Backpacks For Life and Sunrise Senior Living of New Dorp, Staten Island, has launched a donation drive to support homeless and at-risk veterans. From now through May 20th, VNSNY is working with community partners to collect essential items that will be distributed to veterans in need. Requested items include hats, gloves, notebooks, pens, toiletries, feminine hygiene items, first aid products and more. Monetary donations, which will be used to buy similar items for veterans, are also welcome. All donations will be distributed through Backpacks for Life, a nonprofit organization that provides support to homeless and at-risk veterans struggling to reintegrate into civilian life. Founded in 2014 by U.S. Marine Corps veteran Brett D’Alessandro and his fiancé, Alexa Modero, Backpacks for Life has distributed thousands of backpacks filled with essential items across the country, with all supplies donated by members of

VNSNY Welcomes Board Member Simone-Marie Meeks

May 3, 2021–VNSNY’s newest Board member, Simone-Marie Meeks, is accustomed to wearing many hats. In her everyday life, Simone-Marie is Assistant Commissioner and Bureau Chief for the New York State Office of Rent Administration/ETPA (Emergency Tenant Protection Act) Bureau, which is part of the state’s Homes and Community Renewal agency. She’s also the wife of U.S. Congressman Gregory W. Meeks (who represents New York’s 5th District, covering southern Queens and part of Nassau County), the mother of three grown daughters, a brand-new grandmother, and a tennis and swimming enthusiast. And she leads the Queens branch of GirlTrek, a national Black women’s walking organization, which means that early on any given morning, she and a group of 8 to 14 fellow trekkers can be spotted traversing miles of trails and neighborhood sidewalks. Health care and advocacy for health issues have always been passions of hers, says Simone-Marie. “I was very good in biology

VNSNY Celebrates National Volunteer Week

April 19, 2021–Sending heartfelt thanks to our generous volunteers and volunteer interns! Mahatma Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” As we salute National Volunteer Week, from April 18th through April 24th, it’s an apt concept. This week is also a time for VNSNY to celebrate the 258 individuals who supported our mission by donating their services to programs across the organization in 2020. “From administrative support and fundraising to patient outreach and sourcing PPE, volunteering during this pandemic year has looked quite different from years past, with volunteers and volunteer interns pivoting from in-person activities to remote work,” says Michael Ambrosini, Director of Community Corporate Relations for VNSNY’s Volunteer Services. “Providing a total of 12,970 service hours over the past year, VNSNY’s volunteers, including our fundraising volunteers, showed incredible diligence, generosity, and flexibility,” adds Naomi Bibbins, Manager of Volunteer Services. “They

April 16, 2021–From Reducing Hospitalizations to Creating a Roadmap to 4 Stars, VNSNY’s Green Belt Grads Focused on Improving Patient Care Lean Six Sigma may sound like a college fraternity, but it’s actually a set of management tools used by organizations worldwide to help them operate more efficiently and improve the quality of their services or products. (The program uses some of the language of martial arts, with White Belts, Yellow Belts and Green Belts overseen by more experienced Black Belts and Master Black Belts.) Despite the challenges of holding the course virtually due to COVID-19, the course was a resounding success. To encourage cross-fertilization and fresh perspectives, the participants were drawn from across VNSNY—including

Got a Question about VNSNY’s Future? Ask the CEO!

April 1, 2021–Welcome to Ask the CEO, where President and CEO Dan Savitt answers questions from VNSNY staff about what the future holds. If you have a question to ask Dan about VNSNY’s future plans, please email [email protected].   Here is our first question about VNSNY’s future: “With the pandemic, telehealth has become a big part of healthcare delivery as well as visiting MD/house calls. In the future, will VNSNY ever expand into this model of primary care?” And here is the answer… What’s happening currently: Long before the pandemic hit, we were already using telehealth in our care management organization, which relies mostly on virtual visits and remote patient monitoring to support the health of high-risk individuals. This mostly remote approach has proven very effective at preventing hospital admissions among chronically ill patients, and includes virtual visits by a number of disciplines including nurse practitioners, nurse care managers, and social workers. VNSNY’s use of telehealth in other parts of our business

VNSNY Celebrates Holi!

March 31, 2021–The Hindu festival of Holi, also known as “the festival of colors,” concluded this past Monday, March 29. The ancient day and a half long celebration coincides with the lunar calendar, while also marking the end of the Winter season and the beginning of Spring. Holi comes to signify new beginnings: an opportunity for people to end conflicts and forgive one another, while coming together to celebrate a good Spring harvest. Many of VNSNY’s own staff celebrate Holi and took part in the festivities, sharing pictures from this year’s festival as well as Holi celebrations from years past. Thank you for sharing your photos with Frontline, and happy Holi! If you would like to add photos from your own Holi celebrations to this slideshow, you can send them in by clicking here!
