To read Marki Flannery’s account of Elizabeth Tyler, VNSNY’s first African American nurse, click here.  In her email earlier this week saluting Black History Month, VNSNY President and CEO Marki Flannery related the story of VNSNY’s first African American nurse, Elizabeth Tyler, and how Elizabeth helped found the Stillman House Settlement—a branch of VNSNY (known then as the Henry Street Settlement Visiting Nurse Service) on Manhattan’s West Side. The ground-breaking creation of the Stillman House is also the story of another pioneering African American nurse, Edith Carter. Edith joined VNSNY in the spring of 1906, three months after Elizabeth Tyler’s arrival, to assist Elizabeth in caring for residents of Manhattan’s San Juan Hill neighborhood. February 5, 2020–Welcome to the Year of the Rat! This year’s Lunar New Year celebration officially began on January 25th, and staff members across the organization have been recognizing the holiday in their own way. The VNSNY festivities include two official celebrations: On January 23rd, VNSNY’s Chinatown Community Center held a Lunar New Year event for VNSNY’s Chinese-speaking hospice team members and a number of community partners… and the Center is hosting a Lunar New Year Celebration and Open House on Wednesday, February 12th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that will be open to the public. You’ve Heard About the Coronavirus Outbreak — Here’s What You Need to Know About It

January 28, 2020–Since the first reports appeared in late December that a new type of human coronavirus, 2019-nCoV, was active in the city of Wuhan, China, over 100 people have died from the flu-like virus—most of them over 60 or with preexisting illnesses. During that time, the coronavirus has infected thousands of people in China and has also spread to other countries, including the U.S., where five cases have been identified so far. The virus does not pose a major threat to the U.S. at present. A CDC spokesman noted on Monday, January 27th that “2019-nCoV is not spreading in the U.S. at this time. January 26, 2020–From VNSNY CHOICE to Home Care, Partners in Care to Hospice, it was a tremendous year for positive news stories about the organization. The New York Times, the Washington Post, the Amsterdam News, GoodMorningAmerica.com, Today.com, BronxNet TV…  If you saw a great news story about the Visiting Nurse Service of New York during the past year, you’re not alone.  Altogether, VNSNY had 500 positive media placements in 2019. January 22, 2020–Welcome to January’s “News Briefs from Around VNSNY”—a Frontline feature that provides brief updates on recent news and events across the organization. If you have a news brief you’d like to be considered for an upcoming edition, please click here. New IT Help Desk Goes Live! VNSNY’s IT Department launched its new IT Support Service Desk on January 16th. Managed by Unity BPO, the new Service Desk has staff available to answer phone inquiries 24 hours a day. The hotline number remains the same—212-290-3555—and now includes a dedicated phone prompt for people to reset their passwords, as well as prompts for Workday access assistance and HomeCare HomeBase support. There is also a new online Self-Service Portal for staff to enter their own IT help request tickets, which can be accessed through the existing “IT Service” link on the VNSNY Intranet Home Page. VNSNY in 2019 — The Year in Review!

December 18, 2019–It’s been an amazing year at VNSNY, filled with many important accomplishments! Here are some highlights of the past 12 months—plus article links for those who want to take a deeper dive into the year that was! JANUARY Marki Flannery is named one of NYS’s 50 most influential people in health care. Coming this January: A New and Improved IT Help Desk!

December 4, 2019–New Help Desk for IT Support Is Just One of Many Technology Enhancements in the Works Feedback from staff is critical to the process of improving the way we at VNSNY work and the resources we rely on to get our jobs done. At VNSNY Cafés, CHOICE Town Hall meetings and through our Employee Engagement surveys, we heard repeatedly that the difficulty in getting IT support from the Help Desk was frustrating. Our IT department responded! As of January 16th, when you contact the IT Help Desk by phone or through the Intranet, you’re going to notice a vastly improved service—starting with speedier phone pickups, even when demand is heavy. The company Unity BPO is taking over the staffing of VNSNY’s IT Help Desk. With this new partner in place, staff members’ calls will be answered more quickly and their IT issues will be resolved faster. “The result will be
