Creating a Reference Tool to Make Compliance Easier—Maya Seidel, VNSNY Enterprise Compliance Operations Manager

February 25, 2021

A Process Improvement Project Summary

Maya’s process improvement project involves providing the VNSNY CHOICE marketing and product management staff with a reference tool outlining the various rules health plans must follow when offering their products to the public. “My goal is to make it easier for the CHOICE team to make decisions when considering rebranding, new media campaigns, community events and so on,” she says. “This tool will serve as a self-service guide. Meanwhile the Compliance team will continue to be available for specific questions or scenarios the business needs support with.”  avoid the need for them to check with Compliance so often.” Maya had the idea before taking the Process Improvement course, she adds, “but Adam’s class helped me develop the framework to tackle it. The class helped bring it alive, and the other class members’ feedback was very helpful in thinking it through.”

The problem: There are many rules and regulations that health plans must follow when offering their products to the public. Maya and the rest of the Compliance team get various inquiries from the CHOICE Marketing and Product Management teams, checking to see whether their plans are in compliance.

The solution: Maya thought she could make life easier for everyone by creating a digital marketing tracker that clearly outlines relevant regulatory requirements and best practices. The tracker is not intended to replace every call—the Compliance team always stands ready to advise CHOICE and other business units on both general and specific questions.  But the user-friendly tool that Maya and her colleagues are developing is intended to keep the business informed and empower its staff to understand the relevant rules and risks, by providing valuable advance guidance that can be consulted as product and marketing plans are being developed.
