The Fastest (and Easiest) Ways to Reach 220 East 42nd Street

March 8, 2018

You Can Get There from Here! (Wherever “Here” May Be for You.)

For staff at 1250 Broadway who’ll be making the move to 220 East 42nd Street later this year, public transportation offers many options for commuting to the new location. To help you figure out which option works best for you, here are some popular routes into the city from different starting points in the New York metro area.

From Westchester or Connecticut:

Metro-North Railroad’s Harlem, Hudson, and New Haven rail lines all come into Grand Central Terminal (GCT). From there, it’s about a two-block walk to our new office at 220 42nd Street between Third and Second Avenues.

From Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, or the Bronx:

By subway. Connect with the Lexington Ave. 4 or 5 express or 6 local trains; they serve the east side of Manhattan and take you directly to GCT. From the west side, use any train that gets you to the Times Square station. Take the Shuttle (S) or the Flushing Line (7) train from Times Square to GCT.

By bus. The M42 bus travels across Manhattan on 42nd St. from Twelfth to First Avenues; you can transfer to it from any bus that intersects with 42nd St. The M15 bus travels down Second Ave. and stops at 42nd St. The M101 bus travels up Third Ave. and stops at 42nd St.

By express bus. A number of express buses are available from a variety of neighborhoods throughout Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx that will take you to midtown locations not far from our office. For example, the BxM1 travels from Riverdale to Lexington Ave. and 42nd St., the X28 from Bensonhurst to Madison Ave. and 42nd St., and the QM42 will take you from Forest Hills to Third Ave. and 38th. St. Also, the QM32 from Queens goes down 3rd ave with a stop at 41st and 3rd Ave. Click on the links provided for details about the bus line that’s best for you.

From Staten Island:

By ferry and subway. The Staten Island Ferry drops you off at South Ferry. Instead of heading uptown on the Seventh Ave. Line’s 1 local train, walk a block to the Bowling Green station and catch the Lexington Ave. 4 or 5 express train—you’ll reach GCT in just five stops.

By express bus. Express buses from a number of locations throughout Staten Island will bring you close to our new office. For example, the X21 runs from Eltingville to First Ave. and 41st St. Click on the link provided for details about the bus that’s best for you.

From Long Island:

LIRR to Penn Station or Atlantic Terminal. Most LIRR commuters take the train to Penn Station in Manhattan, but as an alternative, you can change at Jamaica for a train to the Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn. From there, take the Lexington Avenue 4 or 5 express train to GCT.

Subway or walk from Penn Station. Take any of the Seventh Ave. Line’s 1, 2, or 3 trains one stop uptown to Times Square and transfer to the Shuttle (S) or Flushing Line 7 train to GCT. Or, in good weather, you might want to take the 20-minute walk to the office.  A shortcut through Bryant Park at the Sixth Ave. and 40th St. entrance will make your walk quicker and more interesting.

From New Jersey:

By rail to Penn Station—plus subway or walking options. NJ TRANSIT provides rail service to Penn Station. If you choose the subway option, take the Seventh Avenue line’s 1, 2, or 3 train one stop uptown to Times Square and transfer to the Shuttle (S) or Flushing Line 7 train to GCT. If you prefer the 20-minute walk to the office, try taking the shortcut through Bryant Park at the Sixth Ave. and 40th St. entrance.

By PATH train—plus subway or walking options. Take the PATH train to its last stop, at 33rd St./Herald SquareIf you choose the subway option, you can either walk to Park Ave. and 33rd St. and take the Lexington Ave. 6 train one stop uptown to GCT, or catch the B, D, F, or M trains at 33rd and Sixth Ave. Take one of those trains one stop uptown to 42nd St., where you can walk a block underground to the 7 train—just one stop away from GCT. If you choose to walk, head straight up Sixth Ave. and take the shortcut through Bryant Park.

By ferry. The NY Waterways ferry takes you from New Jersey locations including Hoboken, Weehawken, and Edgewater across the Hudson River to Twelfth Ave. and 39th St. in Manhattan. You can take a free bus from there to 42nd St. and Third Ave.

From Rockland County:

For commuters traveling into the city from New York State west of the Hudson, Metro-North’s Port Jervis and Spring Valley Lines connect to NJ Transit in Secaucus to bring riders into Penn Station, while Coach USA has a number of bus lines from Rockland County and points north into Port Authority.

Subway exit tips:
