Saluting Jane Edwards and Her 35-Year Career as a Partners in Care HHA

February 21, 2018–For the past few months, Frontline has been profiling home health aides (HHAs) who have been with Partners in Care since its inception in 1983. This month, we salute the fourth member of this distinguished group: Jane Edwards.  Jane Edwards: “I’ll Always Be Here for You” Jane Edwards has been a home health aide (HHA) with Partners in Care since 1983. For 26 of those 35 years, she served as the dedicated night-shift aide for Valerie*. As Jane recalls, Valerie spent most of her time listening to classical music or audio books in her Manhattan apartment before she passed away last year at the remarkable age of 108. “When I started working with Valerie, she could help herself a little bit,” says Jane. “But by the time she was in her late 90s, she had to stay in bed most of the time. I had to reposition her every two

Partners in Care Completes LGBT Training and Earns Platinum SAGECare Certification

February 6, 2018–Last week, VNSNY took another major step in affirming its role as a preferred healthcare provider for New York City’s 750,000 LGBT residents, when the LGBT seniors advocacy group SAGE announced that Partners in Care has been awarded Platinum-level SAGECare certification. This is the SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders) organization’s highest-level award, indicating that 80 percent or more of Partners in Care’s home health aides (HHAs), nurses and other staff have received SAGECare LGBT cultural competency training. “This credential means that our LGBT clients can be assured they’ll be treated with understanding and respect by every member of our Partners in Care staff,” says Barbara Maccaro, Director of Quality Assurance and Education at Partners in Care. Since Partners in Care launched its SAGECare educational initiative last year, all of its nearly 9,000 HHAs have attended a specialized training session designed to raise their awareness of cultural issues and

Saluting Angela Richardson, a Partners in Care HHA Since 1981

January 18, 2018–Over the past several weeks, Frontline VNSNY has been profiling a select group of home health aides (HHAs) who have been with Partners in Care since it was acquired by VNSNY in 1983, and in some cases even longer. This week, we salute the third member of this group: Angela Richardson, who joined Partners in Care in 1981. Angela Richardson: Going the Extra Mile for Her Clients Partners in Care home health aide (HHA) Angela Richardson grew up in Princes Town, Trinidad, in a home big enough to house three generations within its walls: her grandparents, her parents, and Angela and her nine siblings. In the late 1960s, her beloved grandmother Nanny had a stroke, and Angela pitched in as her mother Brinnette took care of her—a foretaste of their future careers for mother and daughter alike. A decade later, Brinnette moved to New York. She knew she wanted to

Saluting Geraldine Singleton and Her Four Decades as a Partners in Care HHA

January 10, 2018–As we noted last month, of the 8,000 home health aides (HHAs) at Partners in Care, five of them have been with Partners in Care since it was acquired by VNSNY in 1983. This month, we salute another member of this distinguished group: Geraldine Singleton, who joined Partners in Care in 1979, and whose HHA career spans four decades. Geraldine Singleton: “I Like Nothing Better than Seeing My Clients Thrive” Looking back on her 38-year career as a Partners in Care home health aide, Geraldine Singleton fondly reminisces about the many people she’s cared for over that time. Her first client was Samuel, an elderly gentleman who lived in Astoria, Queens. A man of good cheer despite his heart and kidney problems, he loved smoking cigars and keeping up with the horseraces on radio and TV. Their relationship was one of mutual affection and respect, recalls Geraldine, and became one of shared

Saluting Patricia Watson, Partners in Care’s Longest-Serving Home Health Aide

December 14, 2017–Every day, over 8,000 Partners in Care home health aides (HHAs) provide care to thousands of New Yorkers, many of whom are VNSNY Home Care patients and CHOICE MLTC members. Out of this large and dedicated group of aides, five have been with Partners in Care since the affiliate was acquired by VNSNY in 1983—including two HHAs who have been working with Partners in Care since the 1970s. Over the next several weeks, Frontline VNSNY will be posting profiles of each of these HHAs. Today, we begin this series by saluting the longest-serving of these home health aides: Patricia Watson, who joined Partners in Care in 1976, a year when Gerard Ford was president, inflation was high, and the country celebrated its bicentennial. “I Love My Work So Much!” With 41 years of experience as a Partners in Care home health aide, Patricia Watson holds the distinction of having served

New Software Streamlines Workflow for Partners in Care Nurses

December 7, 2017–Since June of this year, the nurses and support staff in VNSNY’s Partners in Care division have been using new documentation software that lets them draft and submit their clinical notes digitally, e-fax multiple physician orders instantly, and have their clients sign required paperwork by writing directly on a computer tablet touchscreen. The new software system, a Sandata Technologies product called Santrax Point of Care (SPOC for short), allows nurses to access their assignment calendars directly as well, and alerts clerical staff when physician orders need to be signed. “SPOC will avoid potential errors in documentation, since staff members no longer have to track clinical visits manually on spreadsheets, and it will improve our efficiency,” says Joseph Perry, Director of Private Care Services at Partners in Care. “For example, our Clerical Coordinators previously had to print out and fax each physician order separately. Now, they can send out a whole
