Representative John Lewis—A Civil Rights Giant and a Tireless Advocate of Quality Home Health Care for All
July 20, 2020–Representative John Lewis of Georgia, one of the giants of the civil rights movement, died last Friday at age 80. Lewis, who served more than 30 years in Congress, was the last surviving speaker from the 1963 March on Washington and one of the leaders of the 1965 march for voting rights in Selma, Alabama, in which Lewis and countless other peaceful protesters were attacked by state troopers. Lewis was best known for his civil rights work—both before and after his election to Congress in 1986—but he was also a leader in the fight for access to health care in America. “John Lewis was a major supporter of the Affordable Care Act—better known as Obamacare—and he steadfastly supported policies that addressed health disparities,” says Dan Lowenstein, VNSNY’s Vice President of Government Affairs. “That includes during the COVID-19 health emergency, where he sought to address the underlying flaws in our health
VNSNY’s Data Science Team: Innovating to Create a New COVID-19 Contact-Tracing Tool
July 20, 2020–VNSNY has always responded to public health challenges with creative problem solving and a commitment to people in need, using new tools and on-the-ground insights to improve public health. Our work during the COVID-19 pandemic is no exception. The VNSNY Data Science team, for example, has been hard at work developing ways to better understand and manage the spread of infectious diseases, including COVID-19. This work has led the team to develop a new contact-tracing tool that has the potential to help community-based health care agencies limit the spread of COVID-19 as cases continue to ramp up nationwide. The application, VisitContactTrace, is an open-source application that can be adapted at no charge by organizations that, like VNSNY, deliver community-based healthcare to people who are typically homebound. The application lets users upload their own clinical-visit data in order to map the potential spread of infectious disease within the visit-based service delivery

VNSNY’s Volunteers Provide a Multi-Generational Outpouring of Support
July 7, 2020–When VNSNY volunteer Olga Ferguson learned that a member of her daughter’s Girl Scout troop was sewing cloth masks for her Silver Award project, Olga thought right away of VNSNY. That’s how seventh-grader Michaela Interlandi, assisted by her mother, Wendy, came to make 400 colorful and creatively patterned cloth masks for VNSNY staff. “It feels really great to do my part, knowing that the essential workers have what they need and they won’t be struggling as much,” says Michaela, whose cloth masks are used daily by VNSNY staff for commuting to work and other non-clinical settings. “I was happy when they posted pictures on Instagram in the masks.” Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, VNSNY volunteers have rallied to support and uplift VNSNY staff, patients and families. With hospice volunteers, who are an essential part of VNSNY Hospice, having to suspend in-person visits during the pandemic, hospice
Stand Strong, Be Inspired! Let’s Raise the Flag with Pride!
June 29, 2020–June is Pride Month. These past few weeks, Pride events have been coinciding with ongoing Black Lives Matter protests throughout the nation. Both movements are, at their heart, a call for human rights for all. The Pride movement is rooted in protest, including resistance against police brutality and violence. In fact, the Stonewall Inn uprising – which began 51 years ago on June 28th, set off the LGBTQ movement – led by black and Hispanic drag queens and trans women. Drag queens inspired a human rights revolution at Stonewall in 1969. Today, they still inspire during this historic moment of social change. To celebrate Pride and to help mitigate the disappointment that, due to COVID-19, there was no NYC Pride March yesterday, we asked six drag queen superstars to sing songs of inspiration. If you’re looking to feel inspired (particularly if you’re feeling down that there was no Pride March

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic is no exception. Over the past several months, we have been working tirelessly and with unsurpassed determination under incredibly difficult circumstances so that our patients and plan members can continue to receive the care they need. Many of our colleagues have been stricken with COVID-19 themselves. Thankfully, most of them have recovered and many have even returned to work. Sadly and tragically, however, twelve of our coworkers have died. They
