Meet Lauren Weir, Diana Vargas and the Other Amazing Staff Who Procure, Assemble and Deliver PPE

June 11, 2020–What do you do when the VNSNY Annual Golf Classic—one of your two biggest fundraising events of the year—is postponed because of COVID-19? Answer: You transform yourself into a procurement wizard, using your expert event-planning skills and vendor relationships to secure the essential personal protective equipment (PPE) and other supplies needed to keep VNSNY’s staff, patients and members safe during the pandemic. In fact, that’s exactly what Lauren Weir, VNSNY’s Special Events & Individual Giving Manager, did this spring. In mid-March, as COVID-19 hit the New York metropolitan area at the same time PPE shortages were being felt nationwide, VNSNY began working to develop its own pipeline of PPE. That’s when Lauren, who has been with the VNSNY Development team for 13 years, switched from helping to tee up a fundraising hole-in-one with the VNSNY Golf Classic, and joined forces with Sal Bastardi, VP of Corporate Administrative Services, Michael Bernstein, EVP and

New Yorkers United in Adversity: A Video Message from Our Pride Team

June 11, 2020–June is Pride Month. At this moment in time, when Pride events are coinciding with ongoing Black Lives Matter protests throughout the nation, we recognize that both movements are at their heart a rejection of humiliation and fear, and a call for human rights for all. While there isn’t a Pride March this year due to COVID-19, we can still be there in spirit—thanks to this uplifting video of “We Are the World,” sung by some of New York’s top drag queens, including members of the internationally renowned cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race. This song of inspiration and survival and its message of inclusion are now more important than ever. The Pride movement is rooted in protest, including resistance against police brutality and violence. In fact, the Stonewall Inn uprising that took place in June of 1969 and that led to the start of the LGBTQ movement was led by black and Hispanic drag queens

Remembering AIDS Activist Larry Kramer: An Interview with Arthur Fitting, VNSNY’s LGBT Program Manager

June 10, 2020–For Arthur Fitting, VNSNY’s LGBT Program Manager, the recent death of longtime AIDS activist, playwright and author Larry Kramer was a personal loss. Arthur has been with VNSNY for 30 years, and his experience working as a clinical field nurse in Manhattan caring for AIDS patients in the early days of the epidemic provided unique experiences and memories that he carries with him today. Kramer’s powerful advocacy for people with AIDS during that time made a particularly indelible impression on him. Arthur continues to apply the lessons he learned from Kramer in his current role, working with community organizations, VNSNY’s hospital partners and VNSNY’s own staff to improve access to quality health care within a safe space for the LGBT community. “The need for advocacy, which Larry understood so well, is as strong today as it was at the time of the AIDS epidemic,” he notes. Frontline spoke with Arthur

Honoring Our Colleagues Lost to COVID-19: A Salute to VNSNY Partners in Care Home Health Aide Randall Bailey

June 8, 2020–The heroism shown by the staff of the Visiting Nurse Service of New York in tremendously challenging times is legendary. From the influenza epidemic of 1918 and the polio outbreaks of the mid-20th century, to the emergence of AIDS in the 1980s and the devastation of the 9/11 attacks and Superstorm Sandy, VNSNY’s courageous women and men have always been there to provide care and comfort to New Yorkers in troubled times, despite the risk to themselves. The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic is no exception. Over the past several months, we have been working tirelessly and with unsurpassed determination under incredibly difficult circumstances so that our patients and plan members can continue to receive the care they need. Many of our colleagues have been stricken with COVID-19 themselves. Thankfully, most of them have recovered and many have even returned to work. Sadly and tragically, however, ten of our coworkers have died. They

Gratitude: It’s in the Bag!

May 29, 2020–Sometime in mid-May, Job Becerra, a VNSNY physical therapist coordinator who covers Manhattan’s West Side, started discovering handwritten notes of thanks in his PPE kits. “It was a complete surprise,” he says. “I’ve always felt appreciated at VNSNY, but this response really brings it to a truly personal level.” The initiative is being spearheaded by Peggy O’Neill-Taber, Director, Customer Care Center, and Linda Smith, Associate Director of Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management. They got the idea to do the thank you cards when Alexis Nelis, the daughter of Donna Nelis, Vice President of Hospice Operations, was in one day to volunteer and began slipping appreciative Post-it notes into the PPE bags. Peggy saw the Post-it notes and thought, what a great idea!  While Peggy and Linda initially wanted to keep the program under wraps (“We wanted it to be about the providers, who are the true rock stars—not ourselves,” says Linda),
