Communicating Clearly and Making Eye Contact

August 23, 2018

VNSNY Physical Therapist William “Bill” Kraupner feels that for the right patient, beginning therapy with a “hands-on,” aggressive approach can help build confidence and provide a head start on the path to a quick recovery. Bill should know—he has been with VNSNY for more than 15 years as a physical therapist and rehab supervisor.

Bill’s general tips for physical therapists are simple and straightforward. “Communicate directly, beginning with the initial visit, being sure to make eye contact,” he says.  “Explain clearly and in a friendly manner the specifics of your treatment plan to provide structure, set expectations, and put the patient at ease. And instill confidence by starting with hands-on care.”

Bill believes that by starting with actual physical interaction, such as stretching, at the outset of the very first visit, patients gain confidence that they will progress during the treatment. If a patient should reach a plateau, Bill will typically develop a plan to change the exercises, positions and treatment methods and then discuss his reasoning with the patient to make sure he or she is comfortable with that approach.
